Amjasa, the public water company in Javea, took stock of the two-week testing period in which water desalination plant operated only at night, allowing the concession holder, Acciona, to save on the energy bill with the night time rates. In exchange for authorizing the new operating schedules, the operating company has compensated Amjasa by lowering the amount of water required for purchase.

So, after confirming that this change has not caused any technical problem nor decreased the quality of the water supply, Amjasa's Managing Director, Josep Lluis Henarejos, has described the result of the test run as "optimal", as it has allowed the public company a daily saving of 900 euros. Previously, the water supply injected into the network consisted of 50% water produced by the plant, which they are under obligation to purchase from Acciona, and 50% water originating from its own wells, at a lower cost to Amjasa. Now, with the new operating model, the supply is 66% from wells and only 33% comes from the desalination plant. Of the average daily supply of 15,000 m3 during the winter, Amjasa will only have to buy from 5,000 m3 from the desalination plant, 2,500 m3 less than they had been using to date, thus saving more than 900 euros per day.

This an example of one of the many measures that the new Board of Directors will be implementing to prevent the municipal company, which is facing a very difficult financial situation, from raising their rates in order to avoid going into red numbers. In fact, this measure was advised by the reports received by the previous legislature. According to Henarejos, all the efforts of the current board are focused on stabilizing the financial situation of Amjasa, so at the moment, they cannot lower their rates.

Moreover, now that the testing period is over, starting today they will take advantage of the lowering water demand (due to the rains and the low occupancy of holiday homes) for maintenance of the desalination tank, which is being emptied. Thus, during the coming weeks, the water supply in the network will come exclusively from the wells and the Rompudetes water deposit.

Amjasa is also considering other changes, such as increasing the number of water chlorination points. Currently, chlorine is injected at the output of the network's supply points (Rompudetes tank and desalination plant). Therefore, and within the bounds the law, which establishes parameters of between 0.4 and 1 parts per million, the levels of chlorination depends on the location of the homes. With the addition of new chlorine input points, they will achieve a uniform flow throughout the network. The public water company insists that this improvement does not mean that currently there are problems with chlorination, as it is perfectly within the legal scale, and is tested daily at the desalination plant and at different points of the network.
