David Ferrer has loaned a replica of his Davis Cup to the Javea Town Hall for two weeks. The cup can be viewed in the main all of the Ayuntamiento, where visitors are welcome to have their photographs taken alongside it.
This is yet another grand gesture by the athlete with his home town, which on Wednesday afternoon paid a heart warming tribute to the recent Davis Cup champion after closing one of the best seasons of his career.
Ferrer was received at the Town Hall by Mayor Joseph Chulvi, the entire Council and other authorities, such as the Justice of the Peace or the commanders of the Local Police and Guardia Civil.
After signing the Town Council's book of honour, the player stepped onto a stage set up in the square, where an event had been prepared for the public to celebrate the local hero's achievements of this season.
In David Ferrer words to the public, he expressed his pride in his roots and gratitude for the love and support that his townspeople profess for him. "Each and every one of my triumphs belongs to Javea," he proclaimed, while announcing that the racket with which he won his epic Davis Cup match against Juan Martin Del Potro would stay in his home town forever. "If anyone deserves to keep it, it's all of you," he said.
This racquet will be on view in the display cases of the Town Hall as a tribute to the achievements of the most elite international athlete to have ever come out of Javea.
A thousand people attended the celebration in the square, where they had the opportunity to see their idol up close, and the lucky ones could catch some of the tennis balls that the tennis player hit into the crowd with his racket.
The celebration concluded with music and confetti and the signing of dozens of autographs by David Ferrer for his followers.
